Meet Shirene McKinney

Massage Therapist

Believe it or not, despite being a decorated high school and college track athlete, I never had a massage before going to massage school. During this time, I developed and listened to an intuitive sense of what my body needed to compete at high levels. Paying attention to my own inner wisdom coupled with my natural curiosity for learning meant that I used diet and gentle stretching to support my sports habit. My six-year muscular-injury-free track career showed me that natural self-care practices worked too!

I was drawn to the natural healing aspect of massage therapy. I liked how massage eased my aches and pains, empowered my self-care and strengthened my connection to my body. My initial training in Clinical Massage taught me the basics of Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Sports massage and their application. I knew that I could use these skills to help others get out of pain and feel more connected to themselves.

Since then, I’ve gone on to become a certified Pilates instructor, to complete a Baccalaureate Degree in Anthropology and, of course, to continue my massage education. Over the years, I’ve used deep tissue modalities such as soft-tissue release and neuromuscular therapy to release and reeducate muscle. I’ve honed my sensitivity with gentle methods like reflexology, craniosacral therapy and energy medicine (Shamanic healing and Polarity Therapy) which helps to release tension or pain, relax the body and reconnect clients to themselves. During sessions I integrate all that I’ve learned and offer clients Pilates-based corrective exercises and stretches to support a healthful recovery.

I look forward to deepening my knowledge of the techniques I practice so that I can continue offering and supporting holistic health care to patients at BTLC. It is my greatest wish to help clients recover from the the physical trauma of motor collisions, the everyday stresses of busy lives and to support their health maintenance.

Outside the Office

In my free time, I can be found reading massage theory and technique books or leading weekend bike rides in the Lakewood-LB and surrounding area!
