Introducing Dr. Jeffrey Haygood of Lakewood

Dr. Jeffrey Haygood, Lakewood Chiropractor

I was very athletic when I was growing up and had my share of falls as a kid.  I suffered with migraine headaches during this time, and the only relief I could get was going into a bedroom, shutting the lights off and closing the curtains and trying to sleep it off.  When I was 10 years old, I was taking 8 aspirin a day due to the headaches.  My mother took me to the chiropractor, who then examined me and x-rayed my neck.  He began adjusting my neck on a regular basis, and over time, I went from taking 8 aspirin per day to 6, then 6 aspirin to 4, then 4 aspirin to 2, until I was able to not have to take any on a regular basis.

I continued to receive chiropractic adjustments as I entered college.  Because I played high school sports, I was interested in becoming a physical therapist and attended Whittier College and California State University Long Beach.  While attempting to be accepted into the Physical Therapy program at Long Beach, my chiropractor asked if I would be interested in looking into the chiropractic profession and visiting the local chiropractic colleges.  Since I wanted to help people through natural means, it felt right when visiting these colleges to consider becoming a chiropractor.  After all, if chiropractic helped me restore my health, why shouldn't I become a chiropractor so I, too, could help others.

I attended the Pasadena College of Chiropractic in Pasadena, California, from 1977 to 1980.  I liked the atmosphere of the school and the ability to go to school all year round, so I could graduate sooner.  Therefore, I was able to go through the program in three years instead of four.  The chemistry and physics classes were the most challenging, but performing my internship in the college's outpatient clinic was the most valuable rewarding training I could have experienced.  The most life changing experience I had while in school was performing my internship at the Salvation Army in downtown Los Angeles.  It  was here that we met and experienced the different lifestyles of people and the difficulties they had in life, from being homeless to being addicted to drugs and alcohol, and determining how to help them.

My main goal is to help patients understand what it is I do as a chiropractor and how chiropractic can have a profound effect on their overall health, when used properly.  I believe a properly functioning nervous system is the best way to keep a body healthy and free from vertebral subluxations.  I also believe in spinal function and rehabilitation for long term prevention and maintenance.

The patients that respond the best from our services are the ones that follow through on our recommendations for care, do their exercise program after they are out of pain, and do what is necessary to correct their condition.

The most moving, soul-satisfying and deeply fulfilling aspects of practice that I have seen over the years are the patients that notice other positive effects of chiropractic care besides the original complaints they came in with, such as having more energy, sleeping better, and problems they have had for years clearing up when their medical doctors said they would have to live with this for the rest of their lives.

I have been married for 26 years to my wife, Sandi, who assists me in the practice.  We have 3 children, twin sons that are 23 and our youngest son who is 15.  The twins graduated from college in 2005.  Kyle works in sports marketing for a professional organization here in Southern California and Kurtis has begun a career in finance with a local savings and loan.  Cameron is a sophomore in high school.

Sandi and I met in high school and started dating my freshman year in college.  We enjoy country western music and will often go to concerts.  We have played golf as a family over the years.  We have attended Knott Avenue Christian Church since 1993.  We have become great fans of the Anaheim Ducks ice hockey team and go to the games whenever we get a chance.  Having family get togethers, barbecues, making homemade ice cream and relaxing on the patio are some of our favorite past times.  We have all gotten into working out at our local gym as well.

I have been receiving chiropractic care for the last 40 years.  I have my spine checked anywhere from once per week to once per month.  My workouts are 3 times per week, generally using the elliptical trainer and machine weights.  I consume a greens drink once per day to get my daily fruits and vegetables and antioxidants.  I also take a liquid  multivitamin 1-2 times per day.

My kids do get adjustments to their spine and have been getting adjusted since they were young. After doing much research on vaccinations, we chose not to vaccinate our kids.  However, this is something each parent must research themselves and make that decision regarding their children.

Enough about me!  How can we help you with today's safe and natural chiropractic care?  Give us a call so we can help you take your first step towards better health and wellness.  As always, we offer a "no charge" consultation!

Dr. Litzinger Asks some important questions of interest to Lakewood residents - Chiropractor Lakewood Dr. Litzinger Asks...

Why does chiropractic work?
Chiropractic works because your nervous system, consisting of your brain, spinal cord and all the nerves of your body, controls and regulates every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. A chiropractor locates and reduces areas of nervous system compromise (usually along the spine) so your capacity to heal is restored. Chiropractic works by helping your body work as it was designed.
What's your plan to deal with drug-resistant 'super germs'?
Chiropractors have always been concerned with the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, accelerating the mutation of microbes that make "wonder" drugs increasingly ineffective. My strategy? Do everything possible to bolster my immune system through proper diet, rest, exercise, clean air, pure water and an optimally functioning nervous system with regular chiropractic care.
